For those who’ve never heard of MidiNES, it was created by a genius by the name of Chris Kann, aka x|k. This modified NES cartridge plugs into the Nintendo like any other cartridge, and via any external MIDI device, one can utilize the NES soundcard to create their own original chip-tunes using the authentic NES sound.
Needless to say, I’m excited to try this out with the tracks I’ve been working on for my upcoming TV Show and Cartoon Themes album, due for release at the end of May, 2009. Up until now, I’ve been utilizing plugins that merely simulate the NES sound, but this is the real deal!
I’m going to make my best efforts to convert all my current tracks to be compatible with MidiNES for a better sound, but with a move in mid-May, a busy work schedule and other projects going on, I may be cutting it real close.

You said it! I recorded a bunch of tracks straight off my NES onto my miniDISC player in high school - it looped tracks pretty well, but it still wasn’t the raw format that would be preferable to compressed audio. Who knows, someone in the chip-community is bound to make a pocket .nsf player one of these days…
Thanks for the encouragement!
Comment by Doctor Octoroc 05.11.09 @ 1:37 pmWhat a holy instrument. You must to have waited long for this. I remember there was a waiting list for months, was it, on this thing? Congrats man.
Comment by Marcos G 05.13.09 @ 3:58 pmI’m not sure if it was the MidiNES that you saw the waiting list on, but I thinks its safe to assume it was, since it’s a pretty big ordeal in the chiptune community right now. A lot of people taking both sides of the controversy. I won’t get into it here, but you can check 8 Bit Collective if you’re really curious.
Comment by Doctor Octoroc 05.13.09 @ 6:30 pmI already know about the cartridge and seen what it can do. I was planning on picking it up but read about waiting list and picked up a LSDJ in the meanwhile. I didn’t know there was such a controversy about it, so yeah pass on the details here, I’ll go find that topic on my own.
Well congrats again. ![]()
Oh, ooh! I bought one of these with Matt Kuebrich (nee “Yuppster”). But we never played with it, and then I moved away from San Francisco. ![]()
MIDINES is a great application, but the inventor business method… SUCKS!!!, I paid just one month and 2 days ago for my MIDINES and nothing… I opened a PAYPAL dispute. Hope to get one or get my money back.

That is positively the neatest thing I’ve heard all month. Now if we can only find a way or an .mp3 player to play the chipsets through a car stereo with natural repeating of the tracks the way that Winamp or XMPlayer can do, I won’t ever need the RIAA’s music again.
