8-Bit Dr. Horrible Tribute

So as many of you might have seen floating around the Internet this past week, I’m working on an 8-bit re-creation / tribute to one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen online. If you’ve never seen Dr. Horrible’s Sing-along Blog, then your nerd license is herby revoked until you do.

I find it funny that I hadn’t yet posted about this in my own blog before it was picked up and tweeted by both Felicia Day and Maurissa Tancharoen, then re-tweeted by a slew of Dr. H fans, but better late than never, right? I already posted some tracks and “screen shots” of the hypothetical “Dr. Horrble” Nintendo game-in-the-making on the Autumn Society blog, so rather than post the same content here, hit the jump for some more info about the project, including more images after the jump!

Dr. Horrible\'s Sing-along Game (Title Screen)

For awhile, I was struggling with how to present the musical in 8-bit form in a manner that would preserve the congruity of the original series and the arrangements of the songs, but still be original, fresh and believable, as if it could be an actual game. Since I lack the coding skill and time to create an actual game, I decided to create a video of the hypothetical game, but couldn’t decide what kind of game it would be.

While I’m still unsure exactly what genre it would fall under (aside from action/adventure, perhaps), it could be comparable to cross between an RPG like “Final Fantasy” and “Earthbound”. Using cut scenes to complete the storyline, I decided that this would be the perfect way for a Dr. Horrible game to be made.

Below are some more cutscene sprites.

[...] Octoroc has released a slew of cool 8-bit cover albums, but his recently announced 8-Bit Dr. Horrible Tribute could be the best one yet. Not just content with creating chiptune [...]

I would totally buy the soundtrack to this game.

I guess you’d need to secure publishing rights in order to actually sell the whole soundtrack on, say, CDBaby.com. I’m not sure how expensive that would be — it might just be a percentage of the income would go to the Whedons. (Which would be better than an up-front licensing fee).

Might you have any interest in looking into it? I’d bet you’d sell at least 100 in either download or disc format. CDBaby has attractive terms, and they even accept CDRs.

If you don’t go that route, will you release the whole soundtrack for free? The 3 songs on 8B are great, and I’m using Everything You Ever as a ringtone.

Thanks!

I don’t plan on looking into the rights to sell these covers since it’s just a side project – it’s more of a tribute anyway. The full soundtrack will probably be available as a bonus for purchasing my next album “After These Messages” but I haven’t decided what else I plan on doing with the tracks aside from scoring the video.

I’m thinking of making this into a real JS based game. Get in touch if you’re interested!
