Apparently, someone over at deviantART needs to get their eyes checked - or has something against me.
As many of you know, I dabble in the art of fuse-beads, and run a VG Art Forum that predominantly features bead sprite art. A good friend of mine from the forum and deviantART, Crausse, recommended me for a Daily Deviant and got, what I consider to be, a bullshit reply. He recommended my Spawn Layered Bead Sprite for the DD, and received this message in response:
Sorry, but the photo is quite out-of-focus and although photography of an artwork is not my main criterion, it does have to be at least moderately good enough so that it showcases an artwork well, otherwise there’s the risk of someone flaming the artist for the photography. Nevermind that flamers are picking at the photography when they should be critiquing the object within the photo, but it does happen and that’s a shame. And unfortunately, it seems that the photography of his artworks in his entire gallery are all out-of-focus.
Take a look at the photograph of this piece and you’ll see that it is well lit, well taken, and well in-focus. You can see every bead in there, for fuck’s sake. Not only that, but this guy claims that every piece in my gallery is out of focus - and not just out of focus, but not “moderately good enough”. I’m not a professional photographer, but I know how to take a damn picture that is flattering to my work. This guy is simply full of shit.
My first thought would be to send this guy a message and tell him he needs new glasses - however, I have a better idea. If you’re a member of deviantART, recommend this piece for a DD. I want to get as many people as possible to recommend this.
Hopefully, this will get me the Daily Deviant, and this guy will realize that he’s an idiot.

The problem isn’t that the photograph is out of focus but I think the guy doesn’t know what type of art that is… Does the guy know perfectly well that you work with beads? When you zoom out on the piece it looks out of focus _because_ it’s beadwork… If there ever was a *facepalm* moment this is it.
Comment by CSX 02.23.09 @ 1:17 amI agree, its almost as if the person doesn’t understand what kind of art it is. I do a lot of searching on DeviantArt, next time I run into your stuff I’ll be sure to send in a DD request.
You know, Pixlberry’s work is really well photographed…I wonder what would happen if we were all to nominate a piece of her work? I wonder if they would accept it?
Comment by Gamer Grrlz 02.26.09 @ 3:48 pmI think the size of the piece has something to do with it as well. In a thumbnail preview, the smaller bead sprites are more obviously of a “pixelated” nature. I’d still be curious, though.
